Weekend recap, and new cycle

1. Snatch: technique work

Holy smokes, what a weekend! We had six athletes compete down at Thrush on Saturday for the Washington State Open, and I think 20 total on Sunday for the first-ever Industrious gym meet. These were the first meets for everyone but myself, and everyone did AWESOME! Saturday was nuts...Piper, and Tommy and myself were there from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM I think. Highlights include Rachel getting complimented on her snatch by John Thrush (one of our nations most elite and well-respected coaches, by the way), I think a PR clean and jerk by Tommy, a PR clean and jerk by Molly to qualify her for the American Open, and great lifting by Piper and Stephen and all who participated, especially considering the nervousness that comes with one's first meet! Everyone made a total and had a blast, and of course looked great in their singlets! We got to see some of the top US lifters there too, including Olympian Melanie Roach (finished 6th I believe in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing), and two top-ranked US women with huge lifts. Thanks again to everyone who came out to support us!

All this was just to get warmed up for an awesome event at Industrious on Sunday. We had lifters both from our weightlifting club participating, and those who've never even been to one of our weightlifting classes, and everyone did great! Lots of great performances by everyone. Some of the big highlights of the day for me was watching Ellyse and Natalie on the platform, at only 12 and 14 years old! Both of them lifted great, and I'd LOVE to see what each of these young ladies could do with some more weightlifting training! We recognized Ellyse with our "most fearless lifter" award, and Natalie with the "cleanest lift". I think Natalie probably has one of the most aggressive third pulls I've seen at Industrious. Lots of PRs were set on Sunday, and I lost track of how many times the PR bell was rung. I remember Rachel hitting a PR clean, Molly a PR snatch (both competed on Saturday AND Sunday and set PRs!), a PR clean and jerk by Greg I think, a PR clean and jerk by Conner, and many, many more. We declared overall winners by Sinclair total, and recognized a bunch of fun awards as well. The results:

1st place: Steph Anson and Greg Krueger
2nd place: Alicia Solberg and Thomas Ames
3rd place: Rachel Reyes and Robert Molato

Most fearless: Ellyse Spromberg
Cleanest lift: Natalie Paulson
Best victory dance: Kristina Whitehall
Best dressed: Ron Beavin (for those classy "weightlifting" shoes)
Industrious spirit: Andy Lentz (for that CUSTOM hat and wearing his singlet!)

(Conner had the highest Sinclair total, but we deemed him too good-looking to win :-) Awesome lifting though, Conner! Look forward to seeing you at the next meet!)

I think everyone had a great time, and it went off without a hitch. This was only the first of many to come! We are looking to have another meet sometime around January I think, so stay tuned! If you want to be as prepared as possible for the next one, now is the perfect time to start training! We are starting a new cycle this week, and that means a week of fundamentals! This is the perfect way to get started in the club, and is highly highly highly suggested for new members. This week will be a lot of learning and stick work to drill technique, and hopefully some work with some barbells as well as time allows, depending on how the group progresses. Next week we get back to hitting it hard, and start a full 12 week cycle with the 13th week as competition prep. Competition not your thing? No worries, this program is for everyone, whether you want to compete, get more proficient at snatching and clean and jerking for CrossFit, get stronger, or just want to have a good time. Emphasis on having a good time: this program is FUN! I'll also point out that if you're looking to improve your CrossFit, now is a perfect time to focus on your weightlifting and get stronger! There is no minimum participation requirement beyond this week, but I suggest everyone make it to as many classes this week as possible to get the most out of fundamentals. After that, come once a week or four times a week depending on your schedule and interest level, but remember, you'll get out of it what you put into it!

Thanks to everyone who came out to compete or watch!
